This is an interesting animal - a 2009 female that looks like a hypo lavender pewter. I say looks like because it came out of the "mystery" line of snakes, so the parents were het for practically anything. But she sure looks like one. She probably won't be big enough to breed in 2011, so I have another year to figure out what to pair her with.

Thanks for looking!

This is a female blood produced last year from adult hets (normals het for lava and blood). I kept back this female blood, randomly picking her out of a few other bloods in the clutch, in the hopes that she would ultimately prove het for lava. Interesting color progression as she has matured - her coloration seems to indicate that she is, in fact, het lava. Of course, the proof will ultimately be when I breed her, hopefully next spring.
Thanks for looking!

Has anyone done the cornsnake genome project yet? Is it published? I know, I sound nuts. I know there is a sequence for Mus musculus (common mouse) and also I think the zebra fish, both of which are commonly used as lab animals, but some less "useful" animal genomes have been done.

But seriously, genetics work is a lot easier than it used to be, and the price of the technology is apparently coming down. I dream of being able to find out WHY amels are amel. I mean, I know, they don't synthesize melanin. But what enzyme in the melanin synthesis pathway is broken, and how is it broken? And is that defective gene the same one in mammals? Or not? And how do they synthesize red pigment anyway?

And if the sequence exists, somebody ought to look at gazers, because if it is homologous with any genes known to contribute to mammalian vestibular structures, then they might be useful in researching vestibular disorders. And if we don't have information on what genes DO play a role in the vestibular apparatus, then maybe looking at gazers would give us some clues.

And, well, you get the point. I could babble about genetics & molecular biology all night long but I'll shut up now.

This guy has always been a mystery to me. He's now mature, so I'm getting closer to figuring out what he is through breeding trials, but I unfortunately don't have "that perfect" female to pair him with, so I'd appreciate your speculation.

This boy's parents were a virgin pair of Butter Motleys. Tom Thompson bred them, and every hatchling looked like they should have.. Butter Motleys, except this odd ball.

He's always had a lot of Orange, and when he was younger he was pretty red. He just shed last week and I had a photo shoot with him. Here are recent pictures, followed by a picture of his father and what he looked like as a hatchling. This guy really stumps me. My best guess is that he is an Amel Motley het Caramel.. but with a virgin pair of Butter Motleys is that possible?!

Copperhead
'07 male ?? Motley

His colors are definitely more subtle and muted now as an adult.

In stronger sun

Here is a picture of what he looked like back in '07 when I added him to my collection:

And finally, here's a picture graciously dug up for me by Tom Thompson of this snake's father. I seem to remember the mother looking somewhat similarly, and all the other snakes looked like "normal" Butter Mots.

My collection is kind of small right now, so my plans for him next season are a Hypo het Caramel and Amel. I would like to get my hands on a Caramel Mot though..
Anyway, any speculations or suggestions as to what I should pair him with?

Thanks
